Verizon setup
My roommate's girlfriend went yesterday to the Verizon store downtown (17th&Market, I think) to get an air-card and 3g service plan for her laptop. ( The full story under the cut! )It took me 10-15 minutes to do what a storefull of Verizon employees couldn't do in 3 hours..................... Palm Pre Restore #1
I've had my Pre hacked for about as long as I've owned it, and I got it back in mid-June, a week after it was released. It took until a couple of days ago to really hose the thing. ( Geeky stuff under here... )Anyway, I'm a happy camper now that it's fixed. I almost took the thing to the Sprint store. Thank you, Palm. Your linux-based Pre rocks, and that configuration-restore stuff is just excellent!!! Current Mood: geeky | | Friday, July 17th, 2009 | | 5:53 pm |
Heh... no idea what to put as a title :P
I'm sitting here watching Das Boot for what must be the fifth or sixth time in my life. The subwoofer is shaking the hell out of my aparment, but hey... nothing wrong with that. I got this set of speakers (2.1 sort) from a friend when he upgraded... it's nothing special, but it beats the stupid desktop ones I had before, and beats _by far_ the laptop speakers heh... The laptop speakers probably couldn't even shake the hell out of a feather :P I haven't posted here in a while... and haven't been reading posts for a while. I just skimmed through a few pages of journals to catch up. It's a bit odd being out of the loop, and then realizing that all of these people I know (and even could call "friends") have been living their lives -- some good, a bunch of bad, and a whole lot of random crap like "I got a new car/computer/cellphone/CD/boyfriend/etc. " I hope all of you find what/who/where you're looking for. I decided today to make minimal use of the computer. No games, no SL, no IM, but I've allowed myself a little bit of art sites and now LJ. I've been sitting in front of a screen for hours every day for months on end... needed a break. I got 5 loads of laundry done, and might do a couple more. I cleaned up my room and organized a bunch of junk. I watched some TV and listened to some FM radio... it's nice hearing some DJ voices I haven't heard in... years :) Back to Das Boot now... just got to the scene where they back away from the burning ship with the men in the water... sad scene this one is. Later, maybe some reading or drawing/painting. Maybe 3d-modelling, but that requires the computer :P Current Mood: relaxedCurrent Music: "No One Knows" - Pendulum | | Thursday, June 18th, 2009 | | 9:48 pm |
Misc. Update
I'm sitting here with my friends Marcus and Evan watching Cloverfield for the second night in a row. Last night I watched it thinking that I was the only one who hadn't seen it but it turns out neither of these two have :P I'm making this post from my new Palm Pre. For those who dpnt know, it's the new smartphone on the market. It's essentially iPhone competition. Personally, I like it more than the iPhone and I'm really happy with it. It sure beats the Palm Treo 700p I had a couple of years ago and the "dumbphone" I've been using for a bit over a year. It's got some features the iPhone doesn't have, and the things it's missing should be addressed with the first few firmware updates. One of my favorite things about it is that it runs Linux so it's real easy to hack... In other news, I don't think I'll be going to AC this year, but I did make informal arrangements for next year. Ehh... I'll join you nuts there eventually. Stupid boss wouldn't let me take off if work :P I'm enjoying summer so far... I'l try to make another post soon :P | | Friday, May 15th, 2009 | | 1:02 pm |

"Hey Day"...?!
Today is "Hey Day" on my campus. The general idea is that the junior class ( my class ) is supposed to celebrate being at the apogee of the college experience, three years behind us, one to go. The "proper" way to celebrate is to spend $30 on a t-shirt, bamboo cane, and styrofoam hat (which is probably actually made of EPP or something, but I don't give a shit). Then there's a procession through campus, and the other classes (seniors in particular), are supposed to assail us with a volley of condiment-bottle emissions while we bite at eachothers' foam hats. I guess it sounds like a little bit of fun, maybe, so I went out to buy the stuff and hang out with my friends. That's when I saw the cage. They set up a chain-link cage. There are hundreds of my usually-respectable peers drunk off their asses, in a cage, wearing stupid t-shirts, foam hats, wielding bamboo sticks. Passers-by and policemen are standing outside the fence, laughing. The zoo is a good 30 minutes away, but the primate exhibit is right here on campus today. So now I'm in my room blasting techno. I am not a monkey. MMMmmmm ATB Current Mood: cynicalCurrent Music: Renegade - ATB | | Thursday, April 23rd, 2009 | | 10:53 am |
Animation Prof xP
My animation professor somehow figured out my furriness. I mean...my final 2 projects of the semester involve a dog character, but there's more to it than that. xP The teaching assistant wanted to show us this video in class: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUoc6Wv72csArtist name: "Super Furry Animals" She wanted to show us because of the animation used in the music video xD Before she finished explaining, the professor was like: WAIT WAIT >.> Did you pick this yourself, or did [here's where he glares at me] JOHN have something to do with it?! That was a couple of classes ago. Yesterday, before getting to work on my stuff, I was looking at a frame of the final project I did for last semester's class: http://165.123.171.98/upload/files/lol2.JPG (bonus points if you can find Topher :P) He came over to see what I was working on, and started by asking, "Hey, is that you? :>" LOL There were some other things, too, but I can't remember lol Current Mood: artisticCurrent Music: Super Furry Animals - "It's Not The End of the World?" | | Monday, March 30th, 2009 | | 2:29 am |
April Fools Warning :P
I'm currently witnessing a heated debate in SecondLife regarding the legitimacy of http://www.hotelicopter.com/It looks like most people have are convinced this is an April Fools joke waiting to happen... Everyone be careful for the next couple of days! The only thing to get me last year was Youtube's Rickrolling. AC/Summer Job
I just got my summer job's terms of employment form, which I have to sign some time next week. July 5 is one of the few days through the summer where I'm "absolutely required" to be in attendance at work and can't schedule vacation time. That's the last day of Anthrocon. I just checked Greyhound, and I could get a bus out of Pittsburgh at like 1am and get back here to Philly in time for work. I also might be able to take my own car, but I have no idea if I want to deal with driving across PA, and then parking while there at the con. Also, I haven't planned a single thing for AC... I've been waiting for this employment form, hoping none of these required dates fell in the _middle_ of AC. The last day isn't so bad, I guess... I could leave early. But I still have to figure out where I'd stay (hotel). I think you guys know me well enough... If any of you have some extra space (on the floor is fine with me), I've got the money for my share of a room. I'll buy ya lunch some time too :P And give you a hug? Draw you a picture? Make something in SL for you? Write some code for you? Solve some calculus problems? lol... Thanks for reading :) Current Mood: workingCurrent Music: All I Ever Wanted - Basshunter | | Wednesday, March 25th, 2009 | | 10:37 am |
Thanks and...wow!
So about a week ago, I was really stressed out about school. I made a journal entry in the hopes that someone would respond with some good advice or something. Thank you so much, everyone, for the things you said...it helped me get my mind under control, and helped me get through a lot of schoolwork I didn't want to do at all. ( Read more... )I hope everyone has a nice day. Eat, drink, be merry! Current Mood: awakeCurrent Music: Flight 643 - Tiesto | | Tuesday, March 17th, 2009 | | 11:52 am |
Matrix
Recently, all of the code and math I've been doing for school has been tied in to linear algebra and geometry. That means the main datatype I've been fiddling with is the matrix. Big, multidimensional grids of floating point numbers. I'm getting sick of seeing tables, columns, rows of numbers. When I close my eyes, I see vectors dot-producting in my mind. The other day I had this dream where I was multiplying two sweet matrices (idk... for some reason they were just awesome to dream-me) and I was about half-way done, but then somebody came along and messed up my calculations. That's when I woke up. It's kinda giving me a "Matrix moment". A lot of the stuff I've been coding is physical simulations. Due today is a heat-transfer simulation for my linear algebra class, and tomorrow is a fluid advection simulation for my graphics programming class. This stuff is pretty "realistic" as it is...add a few million processors, and I'm afraid you have The Matrix. Ehhh
Today completes a year of being single! Last year, I got back from spring break and my ex-girlfriend asked me to go over to her dorm room. I thought she wanted to see me (since we'd been away for a week of break), but when I got to her room, I got the breakup talk x___x It's not really bothering me, but I have noticed something recently. Back to 7th or 8th grade, there was almost always a crush in my life...either I had a crush on a girl, or I knew some girl had a crush on me (or I was in a relationship). I haven't had any serious crushes on anybody since before winter break (late December). I haven't been aware of any (female, sane) crushes on me in... in I don't know how long :P I have had some guys like me, and I have had some rather creepy female(?) characters message me. No, sorry, I'm not willing to travel several hundred miles to yiff/cuddle/whatever with you, your partner, your piercings, your tattoos, your animal dildos, or your hate for my religion. I guess, when I think about crushes, there's at least one girl in my life right now I'd be willing to try a relationship with... must think that over :P *waves byebye to reader* Song in the journal tag things: http://165.123.160.81/upload/files/01%20You%20and%20I.mp3You and I belong together ♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫ Current Mood: flirtyCurrent Music: "You and I" - Griffen | | Saturday, March 14th, 2009 | | 12:41 pm |
I don't know
I just don't know what's up. I usually keep my sour mind to myself, but I'm afraid I've got some problems or something. ( Emo enough that the post has a cut (har har get it x___x) )Looking at my blabber here, I want to just close this page and not post it (I've done this many times in the past), but I was pretty certain when I started that I wanted to make a journal entry, so I'll entertain 20-minute-ago-me and try to solidify some of this catharsis by pressing "Post to searedice". You can smack me if I get emo again...or give me a hug ^^ (It's bound to happen a couple of times a week) Current Mood: discontentCurrent Music: Easier to Run - Linkin Park | | Thursday, February 5th, 2009 | | 11:51 am |

Hair, school
Yesterday on my way to physics class, a cute girl stopped me in the hallway of the engineering building. She said my hair makes me "look like a rock star!" We chatted for a couple of minutes (I don't even remember about what), but then I had to go to class. Wooo self-esteem boost! Unfortunately, I also am quite behind in schoolwork, which has much-more-than-nullified any positive vibes from the rock-star-hair encounter. I've got some animation stuff to work on for tomorrow, a bunch of assignments to grade by yesterday (ughh) for my class-grader job, a programming project due Thursday, and the big-mama-homework-assignment, some problems for my algorithms class, due Thursday. I really should have turned in that last assignment today, but I won't be penalized if I get it in on Thursday... I see some people have been getting sick... I hope and pray you all get better soon! :) Current Mood: sleepyCurrent Music: "Block in the Back" - DJCA | | Sunday, February 1st, 2009 | | 4:45 pm |

Yiff in hell!
Wait, what?! Today, after a research project meeting, I was sitting in the newly renovated computer graphics lab with my laptop, making some changes to the code we had been discussing. Another guy in my major saw me and the guy I was working with and so he came in to chat with us. A while back, I was working on an independent study project in Second Life with him, so the conversation eventually got to SL. For whatever reason, I decided to open SL on the laptop while we were talking. Once my avatar loaded up (which is an alien with a tail, by the way), my friend asked "Wow, John, is that...a furry tail?" I responded, "my avatar is an alien...seriously, but yeah it has a tail." His commentary continued: "That's a really furry tail. Are you a furfag?" "...dude, you better not be one of those furfags!" "That's totally a furry avatar!" "Wow, JD, yiff in hell" "Yiff in hell, man" I had no idea what to say, so I just kinda let out a dry laugh and closed SL. He went back to talking with the other guy, as if he didn't just tell someone to "yiff in hell." It was just...weird. Current Mood: confused | | Tuesday, January 27th, 2009 | | 10:47 am |
How things change...
I was just thinking about how culture keeps changing all around me. I'm finally old enough that I notice when things "aren't the way they used to be." Years from now, children (my children? will I have children?) won't know what an answering machine is. They won't know what a VHS tape is. Maybe even a vinyl record. Will my children ever see a record turntable in-person? Will analog equipment exist? Will my children ever see a tungsten filament? A vaccuum tube? Will my son ever pick up a 35mm camera, take some photos, and then develop and print them himself in a darkroom? I feel unjustifiably priviledged to have grown up in a time at the end of an analog world. I want some of it to stay. I don't want to be the bearer of memories of things long past and obsolete. It's making me tear up, but anyway... back to preparing for today's classes...
